St. Martin's ChurchWomersleySaturday 2nd February 2008As has become somewhat of a tradition in previous years, the first concert of the new year was held in the delightful St. Martin's Church, Womersley. This has become regular event for us for many years now, which is very much enjoyed by the Band. We are always made very welcome and Judith and the team can't seem to do enough for us. It was delightful to see so many regular faces for this event and get a chance to catch up with many of them. Many came up after the event to say how much they had enjoyed it once again, and there were even people there for the first time who also told us how much they had enjoyed the whole concert. As usual, the organisers provided an excellent spread of refreshments, including the very welcome warm mulled wine, which was brought to people at their seats (due to space restrictions). Once again, this was a great evening enjoyed by both the audience and the band, and we already look forward to coming back next year. DIVA Spring ShowcaseCentral Methodist Church, PontefractFriday 25th April 2008KCB have been involved with the Development Initiatives for Voluntary Arts (DIVA) for many years now. For more information of this excellent group who dedicate their time and efforts into developing all types of Arts for the local area, please see our Links page. We were again able to support this excellent group by performing in the first concert DIVA arranged for their first Spring Showcase event. That was a weekend of events to highlight local arts of all varieties and included two concerts of music and song, paintings, pottery, photography and so much more. The events were based in the Central Methodist Church and at other locations around Pontefract. The first half of the concert featured the voices of the Pontefract Male Voice Choir who looked excellent in their blue blazers. We have performed at events with this choir before and as usual they put on a great performance. During the interval, the audience were able to view the many paintings, photographs and items of pottery produced by local art groups, as they enjoyed their refreshments. In the second half of the concert, KCB took to the stage and thrilled the audience with a wide range of music that we had been preparing for the occasion. I heard after the even that "Ticket to Ride" (originally by the Beatles) had gone down particularly well. This was a great evening enjoyed by both the audience and the performers and is a tribute to the work that DIVA had put into the preparations. I understand the whole weekend, including the second concert on the Saturday evening, had gone down very well and we wish them continued success with plans to put on further showcase events to publicise local arts in the area.
Fund Raising ConcertSt. Cuthberts Church, AckworthSaturday 31st May 2008KCB performed at a fund raising event in aid of the church's restoration appeal. The event also formed part of the Ackworth Heritage Group Green Event which is was held over the same weekend. Due to several players being unavailable on the day, we had to make several changes to the pieces being played. But Graham expertly put together a lovely program of music for the occasion that the attending players could perform. The lovely acoustics of the church hall enhanced the music, and everyone in the audience filling the hall seemed to enjoy the performance very well, and probably didn't realise we were a little short handed, as it didn't affect the performance at all. We received some wonderful comments from people for many days following the performance, for which we are very grateful. The organisers laid on refreshments for all following the concert, and they enjoyed our performance so much, that they have asked us if we would do a similar event on an annual basis from now on. We will be glad to support them of course and the next concert is already provisionally booked for 6th June next year. See you there. Grove ParkKnottingleySaturday 19th June 2008It might have been the longest day (in terms of daylight hours), but the weather didn't match up to the extra daylight. It rained most of the day. However, this did not put off the organisers for the annual Garden Party held on behalf for the Grove park residents and the event went ahead as planned. The band has supported this event several times over the past few years, and the elderly folk all seem to enjoy our music. Many fondly recall stories of the Salvation Army brass bands in their own streets, and it is great to see their faces light up with the sounds of our own brass music to this day. We performed under cover of a couple of gazebos and the rest of the garden party was held under a larger gazebo and within the building itself. The weather may have kept a few people from attending, which is unfortunate for the elderly folks, but it didn't stop everyone who did come from having an enjoyable time. Knottingley CarnivalKnottingleySaturday 12th July 2008We were delighted to once again be the band of choice to lead the Knottingley Carnival procession, ahead of the floats, vintage vehicles, street entertainers, majorettes and more, just as we have done many times in the past. It is possible this may have been the last carnival, because there where not many floats organised and the cost of insurance is escalating out of hand and beyond what the organisers can afford. We hope they manage to sort something out for next year, as it would be such a shame for this annual event to have to be abandoned. As for this year, the weather just about managed to behave itself for us, though the skys were threatening at times. The usual route was taken around the streets of Knottingley with a well deserved break half way round. In many places, the streets were lined with waving people who came out to see the passing parade. And it all ended up at the sports field where everything was arranged for an enjoyable afternoon at the stalls offering fun and games, crafts, information and many forms of food. Fingers crossed this tradition can be kept alive for years to come. Patron's Concert "The Pleasure of Music"Ackworth Quaker School WF7 7LTSaturday 19th July 2008A lot of work had been put in by Graham and the band members to prepare a wonderful, exciting and varied range of music for this years Patrons' Concert entitled "The Pleasure of Music". Even our junior band had been working both at individual lessons at the weekend, and three had also been able to join the main band at rehearsal on Monday evenings, to prepare two pieces which were performed during the concert and featured themselves. Gill, Roy and Diane had also been working hard leading up to the concert to prepare the all the refreshments for both the VIP room for our Patrons before the start of the concert and also for the refreshments at the interval for everyone. The chocolate fountain seemed to be a great favourite with just about everyone. The concert itself could hardly have gone any better, and all the hours spent in rehearsals were rewarded on the night as the music for the various pieces filled the hall. The excitement of the stronger pieces was matched by the control of the softer music and as each piece ended, it was met with wonderful applause from the delighted audience. We have received some wonderful feedback from the people there, including another person who came along and was not expected to enjoy herself, but found our style of music completely different to what she expected and thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. Roy even signed up some more Patrons on the night, as they were that delighted by the concert. Our thanks to everyone who helped organise this year's event.
Summer FayreThorpe AudlinSunday 20rd July 2006Following on from a tiring day at the Patrons' concert just the day before, it was pleasing to see a good turn out for this Summer Fayre in the sports field in Thorpe Audlin. The lane to the field is long and narrow with no passing places, and they could do with organising marshals, as confusion reigned for a time as a queue of cars backing out onto the main road who were trying to get onto the field, found themselves head on with a driver who wasn't confident enough to drive her car backwards along the narrow path to let them all pass. Once this was eventually resolved, the event got underway, and we entertained the people visiting the various stalls and refreshment tent with a mixture of traditional marches (which always sound great outdoors) and a selection of music that we had performed the previous evening. there were a few short showers, but nothing to dampen the spirit of the event itself.
