Church of Christ the King Annual Report 2002

We began the year at Christ the King newly relieved of the overhead of administration with the D.C.C. disbanded and the P.C.C. forming a task team instead. Little did we realise that we would also be without a vicar for most of the year as well. However, Elaine Martin (co-opted as the P.C.C. representative), the Church Wardens and Anne Price have worked hard to ensure that the congregation at Christ the King have been kept fully in touch with Holy Trinity and the rest of the parish.

Despite the absence of a vicar, the Anglican congregation at Christ the King has continued to grow with new people finding a home here. The Sunday School regularly has fifteen plus children in attendance. Some children come on their own, not through parents, which is very encouraging. New regular teachers have started to share the workload this represents. The Thursday service continues to be well appreciated and on the few occasions when no Priest has been available the congregation has learnt to lead Morning Prayer for themselves.

A particular highlight of the year was the Christmas Starlight Concert and Carol Service. Not only did a lot of adults and young people put on an enjoyable show but they also ensured that money was raised for the Children in Distress charity to go with that raised from the Harvest offerings and Coffee Mornings. That particular charity was chosen as a focus for the Parish, and was taken to heart by the people at Christ the King with the money from the after service tea and coffee plus the Thursday soup days making a significant contribution to the total.

After a good Christmas we were all very sad to lose Flo Goulbourne and not much later Kathleen Cripps. Both of them leave a whole in the family. Flo was especially missed by the children who made dove's of peace in her honour.

The Joint Church Council which is responsible for the church building and joint services has had a busy year. New curtains have been installed both for our benefit and for other users. A new regular group that hires the building, contributed to the costs so that they could show slide projections. A new revised constitution has been agreed to facilitate the occasions when any of the three congregations are in a vacancy situation.

Christ the King continues to be an exciting place to worship. If you have never been, why not come to a service one Sunday. We have a non-Eucharist service on the first Sunday of the month called Praise Together and a more traditional Eucharist service on other Sundays as well as the Thursday service.
