CHURCH CHOIR
The big event of a busy year for members
of your choir was undoubtedly the sponsored hymn singing event in October
which raised a magnificent £900 for church funds. In my report for 2004 I said the choir
was willing to share in fund-raising work and that we had a number of
ideas up our surplice sleeves. The Hymnsing
04 event was one of those ideas and we are extremely grateful to all
those who supported it. My personal thanks go to all the members
of the choir - and I include Geoff and Ysmena
as members because they are always willing to add their voices to the
ensemble - for the rehearsal time they put in for the event and their
stamina during the afternoon. Thanks
also to the people who helped on the day with refreshments - and those
who sat it out to hear their favourite hymns sung. Best thanks of all
go to the choir members who 'persuaded' the congregation and their friends
and relatives to part with so much money. The event exceeded all our
expectations. Watch out - we may do it again! We continue to be able to raise a
four-part choir Sunday by Sunday - though we are always in need of new
faces and voices, and can assure you that singing is not such a daunting
prospect. Please give it a thought and have a quiet word with Choir
director Catherine Smith and she will arrange a short voice test to
see where you could fit in. As I write we are in rehearsal for
two upcoming special events - the Friends concert and the devotional
presentation on Palm Sunday. We were gratified to see such a good
congregation for the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols just before
Christmas, at which we sang some old favourites and a few items new
to us. I think it is a pity that all that wonderful music only gets
an airing at Christmas time, so maybe, just maybe, we'll sing carols
in high summer! I have heard that there are between 60 and 100 different
settings for While Shepherds Watched, so maybe there's another marathon
singing subject. Or maybe not. As always we are very grateful to
the deputies who fill in during times of need and often at short notice.
